You'll be surprise to learn that despite the fact that the financial future of almost
every American is dependent on their credit ratings, very few of us have actually seen
our credit report.
We are all aware of the popular cliché that says " information is power". If you agree
with it, then you need to empower yourself by knowing what is contained in
your credit report.
There are three major credit reporting agencies and they are Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. Each of these agencies give one free credit report per year. And you
should take advantage of this offer. It does not cost you anything, so why not?
You can either order the credit reports individually from the three respective credit
reporting agencies or you can get them all at once at with the "Annual Credit Report
Request Form" located here: http://ftc.gov/credit.
You can also request it by phone (1(877)322-8228) or by mail: Annual Credit Report Request Service. P.O Box 105281, Atlanta, GA - 30348-5281.

You need to get your credit report as often as possible ( this does not affect your credit
score - if you're checking your report for personal use). At least check the report once
a year. You'll be amazed to learn that about 80-90 percent of credit reports contain
inaccurate information. The number of pages that you get will depend on the number of financial activity.
Once you've obtained the report, take time out to carefully review the report and your score.
Make sure it is accurate and up to date. Ensure that your report does not contain someone else's
information, particularly if you share same name with other people. It is very easy to misapply
information because of similar names. You need to be absolutely sure that your credit report contains
only your information and not someone else's. Read the credit report line by line...
What You Need to Look At.
Verify that the social security and other personal information are correct such as your current
and previous addresses. Make sure that the credit cards, loans judgments and other debts are
actually yours. You need to be on the lookout for any inaccuracies no matter how small or insignificant.
If you find an error that is reported by a particular creditor, contact that creditor directly to get it
rectified. Sometimes, the creditor may be too busy to answer your inquiry or are just not willing to help.
In this situation, you need to contact the credit reporting agency directly. All the credit
bureaus have
processes in place for consumers to dispute inaccuracies on their credit report.
You need to pay particular attention to the negative items section of your credit report.
